Join us for ‘The Migrant Institute: performing (non)belonging & post-Brexit imaginaries’ on Tuesday, 9 June 2020, ONLINE, 10am-12 workshop / 2-3.30pm discussions.

The Migrant Dramaturgies Network is looking for first-generation migrant theatre and performance makers based in Bristol and the South West for a one-day ideas’ exchange to meet, discuss and share perspectives on artistic and creative practices informed by migration to the UK. We hope to explore new ways of performing migration and forge exciting new collaborations. This participatory event will feature a performance workshop with Lara Parmiani (artistic director of LegalAliens International Theatre, London) and a set of discussions facilitated by theatre, migration and media scholars.

The entire event is FREE to attend, and we welcome everyone who is interested in migration and performing arts!

Due to limited availability, please register HERE.

For further info email: the.migrant.institute.uk@gmail.com

More about the project

This event forms part of an experimental research and performance project that brings together migrant theatre-makers and scholars from theatre, migration & mobility studies, environmental humanities and media studies from Bristol, the South West and London. We explore new forms of migrant representations and performance practices emerging from experiences of migration in the UK. We look at migratory identities in connection to (non)belonging to geographical and cultural spaces, to examine geopolitics of memory and translocal identities in performance.

Amidst increasingly polarised narratives of migration – where humanitarian and security narratives position migrants either as victims or threats to national security – we believe is important to shape better narratives in order to shape better policies. For this, our project opens new creative spaces for recognition: mapping, debating and sharing new perspectives via performance workshops, ideas exchange and debates.

The project is funded by the Brigstow Institute (Bristol).

Closed Lands: discussion @VaultFestival, 4 March

Join us at the Vault Festival in London on 4 March 2020 for Closed Lands and take part in the post-show discussion with French playwright, Simon Grangeat; director, Becka McFadden; David Furlong, artistic director of Exchange Theatre and Dr Szabolcs Musca from our research network.

Closed Lands [Terres Closes] is written by Simon Grangeat and produced by LegalAliens Theatre featuring an all female international cast directed by Becka McFadden. I was startled. It had not occurred to me that anybody in his family could actually make something. All I had heard about them was how poor they were, so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor. After receiving 157 play submissions from across Europe, three plays were chosen, workshopped and presented in collaboration with LegalAliens Theatre.

The aim was to find plays that addressed the theme of migration in an original and non clichéd manner, and each of the plays did just this: Genesis by Chiara Boscaro (Italy), The Sea is My Nation by Hala Moughanie (Lebanon/France) and Closed Lands by Simon Grangeat (France).

The event provided a forum for encounters with members from a variety of sectors, practitioners and academics, and the lively Q&As and public debate (curated by Dr Szabolcs Musca) offered a space for debate and interchanges drawing from themes within the plays. Consequently, ‘theatre of migration pays attention to imagining the contact zone between those who arrive and those who lay claim to ownership or custodianship over a territory. But who does the imagining?’ (2014:4-5). Moreover, what are the ethics of such encounters and the dramaturgical politics of such imagining? This lecture wishes to map the interferences between ethical and creative/ aesthetic practices of staging and performing migration, refugedom and asylum in a contemporary context. I will look at ethical positions and qualities in artistic processes and aesthetic modalities of migrant representation in contemporary theatre and performance in Europe and beyond.

It gives particular urgency to this issue that alongside traditional forms of migrant theatre (e.g. documentary, verbatim and testimonial theatre), new immersive, participatory and durational theatre projects have started to emerge. Driven by a quest for new aesthetic models to counter victimhood narratives and enhance empowerment, a growing number of migrant theatre initiatives employ complex artistic practices that act on multiple aesthetic, social and cultural levels. While surveying emerging ‘migratory aesthetics’ (Bal 2007), this lecture will present migrant theatre as ethical practice, highlighting that acts of representation, narration and participation have instrumental power in shaping the perception and reception of migrant cultures and communities.

Since migrant theatre productions strongly connect to individual and communal histories, ideologies and identities, having a personal impact on their participants (see Thompson 2004), ethical considerations are paramount in creative engagements and performative appropriations.

[SM]

New journal issue on ‘Playing Inclusion’

We are really happy to see the publication of a special journal issue on ‘Playing Inclusion. During the event, we discussed a variety of emerging migrant theatre initiatives both in the UK and mainland Europe as well as the relationship between activism and migrant theatre (Dr Szabolcs Musca), directorial practices and philosophies of alterity (Dr Graça Corrêa). Beyond contemporary issues, we also looked at the use of mock-migratory backgrounds in early twentieth-century music-hall performances within the context of colonialism (Dr Katja Krebs).

The conversation focused on the unpicking of crisis narratives, the role empathy plays both in theatrical practice as well as Realpolitik of migration, and their foundations in colonial attitudes and complicity as enacted by both audience and performer.

#MigrationsHarbourEurope will bring together thinkers, makers...

#MigrationsHarbourEurope will bring together thinkers, makers and spectators. The aim was to find texts addressing the theme of migration in an original and non cliched manner, avoiding the pitfall, noted by Chimamanda Adichie of “falling for the single story, reducing complex human beings to a single narrative”.

The plays will be presented at the Arcola Theatre, Studio 2 from 1.30pm on the 5th, 6th, 7th of February 2019, directed by Becka McFadden and performed by a multilingual international cast: Luiana Bonfim, Daiva Dominyka, Lara Parmiani, Stelios Trakas.

Every reading will be followed by a Q&A/debate curated by Dr Szabolcs Musca (University of Lisbon/ New Tides Platform UK/ Migrant Dramaturgies Network).

GENESIS

by Chiara Boscaro (Italy)

Translated by Lara Parmiani

DATE: 5th February 2019 @1.30PM
VENUE: Arcola Theatre Studio 2,
24 Ashwin St, Dalston, London E8 3DL

A woman arrives in a foreign city. All around her, a language she can’t speak. Unable to give a name to things, she lives on the margins of society. Who is she? A refugee escaping war? Or somebody looking for a better place to bring a new life to the world? A modern morality play with the charm of a fairytale and the depth of an old myth, Chiara Boscaro’s play focuses on language as an empowering tool, helping us delineating the borders of our personal world.

To book, click here

CHIARA BOSCARO is an Italian playwright whose work has been translated into Catalan, French, English and Finnish. On hearing “migrants from the war” are arriving, they decide to build a barbwire border around their makeshift property. The journal issue is informed by the work of Migrant Dramaturgies Network, an international research network that explores emerging dramaturgies of theatrical responses to migration in light of recent migration and shifts in global politics and economics. MDNetwork aims to map new theatrical forms of migrant representation and identify their impacts on national theatre cultures in shaping the perception of non-European migrants and migrant cultures.

We wish to open this issue to contributions beyond our network board and would like to encourage submissions that deal directly with the interferences between ethical and creative/ aesthetic practices of staging and performing migration, refugedom and asylum in a contemporary context. Please note that there is a limited amount of space available for scholarly articles and intervention pieces in this issue!

This journal issue would look at ethical positions and qualities in artistic processes and aesthetic modalities of migrant representation in contemporary theatre and performance in Europe and beyond.

While surveying emerging ‘migratory aesthetics’ (see Bal 2007), this journal issue aims to present migrant theatre as ethical practice, highlighting that acts of representation, narration and participation have instrumental power in shaping perception and reception of migrant cultures and communities. Since migrant theatre productions strongly connect to individual and communal histories, ideologies and identities having a personal impact on their participants (see Thompson 2004), ethical considerations are paramount in creative engagements and performative appropriations.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Aesthetics of migrant representation and self-representation

Ethics of representation and self-representation

Dramaturgies of alterity and empathy

Ethics of participation

Ethics of inclusion (artistic, social and institutional)

Ethics of telling and re-telling

Performing displacement and refugedom

Migratory identities in contemporary theatre and performance

Issues of sustainability in migrant theatre initiatives

Ethics of fostering narratives and counter-narratives

Social engagement vs. artistic supremacies

Alongside scholarly articles, this special journal issue will feature a Perspectives/Interventions section designed to incorporate a broad spectrum of ideas and experiences which could include practitioners’ perspectives through interviews with migrant artists, intervention pieces, reports from performance projects and documentation of practice.

We welcome scholarly articles ( max. 5000 words incl. references) and intervention pieces and interviews ( max. 2000 words). All submissions must include full references and bibliography, and articles should also include an abstract (max. 150 words) and a short bio-note.Please find the PEET style guidelines at:

https://www.intellectbooks.co.uk/MediaManager/File/intellectstyleguide2016v1.pdf

Please send full articles to Szabolcs Musca (szabolcs.musca[at] gmail.com) by 31 January 2019.

CfP-Migrations: Harbour Europe

LegalAliens Theatre in collaboration with New Tides Platform and Migrant Dramaturgies Network is looking for plays by EU-based playwrights on the theme of Migrations: Harbour Europe. We are encouraging submissions that address and reflect on the broad topic of migration and Europe. While we acknowledge the importance of documentary/ verbatim plays that deal directly with migratory identities and experiences, this CfP wishes to attract original, bold and imaginative scripts which fully embrace theatricality and offers creative/ aesthetic alternatives for (re)imagining migrancy in Europe today.

We welcome plays that challenge stereotypes, clichés and dominant narratives of migration. The call is intentionally broad and can be approached literally, metaphorically or abstractly. This is to allow writers to interpret the theme widely. Yet, playwrights might wish to reflect on some relevant questions, such as: How recent geopolitical and economic events affected people’s perception of Europe? What is the relationship between those who arrive and those who reside, i.e. migrants and host communities? Who is the other and what it means to be a foreigner? How is ‘Fortress Europe’ seen from the outside? What is home?

We particularly encourage submissions from strong female voices and playwrights who identify as migrants or of migrant descent (including those born in an EU country but living in another or born outside the EU but currently living/working in Europe).

Submission requirements:

Written in a European language (including English)

Please include a one-page synopsis in English. If an English translation exists, it can also be attached, with the understanding that LegalAliens is likely to create a new translation

Plays already performed in their original language are welcome, provided they’ve never been presented in the UK

Between 60-80 minutes in length

1-5 actors (multi-roling accepted)

Submitted in .doc or .pdf format

Further details

Submissions will be read by a panel composed of theatre-makers (directors, actors, dramaturgs), translators, academics and theatre critics. Up to three plays will be selected and translated into English. After selection (and translation), plays will be given a week of R&D with our team in London and presented as staged readings at the Arcola Theatre in London. Staged readings will be followed by public debates led by international theatre scholars.
